Collaboration: A Step towards Cashless Society

Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu said “it is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s financial inclusive programme as one does not need to have a bank account in UBI to have the card and you can avail it online also…” after declaring the collaboration of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) with Union Bank of India (UBI) to launch IRCTC RuPay Debit Card. It can be used exclusively for booking train tickets on railway portal.

Benefits of the Card:

This union with bank with sole purpose for increasing a customer’s interest is coming with a set of benefits. Some of such benefits are:

  • The railway tickets can be book at the URL of Indian Railway ( irctc.co.in/ )
  • For the first 6 months, there would be no transaction charge. It means 5 bookings per card every month on Indian rail website for the initial 6 months after buying the card. After that, the free usage is over, Rs. 10 will be charged as a transaction charge on the every train ticket booking.
  • There will be also an accident insurance of Rs. 2, 00, 000 will be provided to the full KYC card holder.
  • There will be reward points on each transaction which is similar to the ones offered by credit and debit cards which people use currently. But IRCTC/UBI has yet to specify where these earned points can be used or to redeem what.

Options:

There are two options available on the card:

  • Virtual Card:

This requires partial KYC details. The card comes with max card limit of Rs. 10,000 and is valid for 1 year.

It is completely free and once applied for, the credentials are sent to the registered e-mail id which then can be used for booking the train tickets.

  • Physical Card

It is similar to last option i.e. valid for 1 year along with max card limit of Rs. 10,000. But, on providing full KYC details, the validity will be for 3 years and the limit will be extend to Rs. 50,000.

The card, after applying for, will be sent to your registered mailing address and after expiry the user can apply for a new card. Unlike virtual card, which comes free, the physical card cost Rs. 50.

Earlier, this month, IRCTC joined with Amazon.in, Jubilant Foodworks, BookMMyTrain.com to make this card interesting as well as encouraging to their customers (passengers). For instance, passengers who traveling in train, across selected train stations, can order for pizza online.

This collaborated card can be use in various occasions, in the future though. Like there are possibilities it can be use in e-catering, tourism, Archaeological Survey of India-which let booking to sites like Taj Mahal to be online, etc.
