Digital Life Certificates for Pensioners Explained

2 min read

Digitizing Life Certificates is an innovative method undertaken to alleviate the inconvenience of government pensioners in getting a life certificate every year. Under this new scheme, pensioners do not need to present themselves to any Pension Disbursing Agency or get a life certificate issued by the authority where they worked and deliver it to an agency every November. The earlier process entailed a lot of hardship for the aged and ailing pensioners since they had to remember and manually deliver the life certificates before the stipulated date. The process was also a major hurdle for those who had relocated from their place of work.

Get the basics right

The digitization process is aimed to benefit over 1 crore Central and State government pensioners who have access to Aadhar card details. Pensioners can enroll by downloading the application on their Android phones or their Internet browsers as well. You can also visit the approved centers across India and enroll with the help of the officials present there. The pensioner need not be present in the country to get registered. The digitisation process is not chargeable and the pensioner needs to register only once.

Do it yourself

If you want to download the application visit the official website jeevanpraman.gov.in. If you are using a desktop or a laptop, download the application package meant for PC. Similarly, for an Android or a smart phone go for the Android app. Then, register using the Aadhar card details. After that, attach a bio-metric device that is compatible with your computer or smart phone to scan the finger. A detailed write-up is present along with the software necessary to use the scanned finger print. The driver software needed for bio-metric devices is also available on the website. The Jeevan Pranam Client at present supports Mantra and Morpho finger print scanner and the Iritec Iris scanner. A new list of compatible supports for other devices will be added soon. Since the software will get updated automatically, you need not download it again from the website. A unique ID will get generated once the bio-metric credentials match with the ones available there. This ID gets saved in the Jeevan Pramaan digital life certificate list and can be accessed by all banks and pension disbursal agencies for verification. You will receive a text message containing the acknowledgement of the registration as well as the generated ID. Pensioners can also provide the ID generated to banks as and when required during the withdrawal of their pensions.

Very recently EPFO also started testing Digital life certificates (EPFO – Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation of India) as a pilot projects in Delhi and Chandigargh and soon could extended to a nationwide facility for pensioners to submit digital life certificates through mobile phones.

The registration camps

Don’t worry if you are not tech-savvy. Around 40,000 centres have been set up for registering pensioners. You need to carry your Aadhar card, PPO details, Bank Pension Account number, and cell phone number. A list of the centres where you can register is available on the Jeevan Pramaan official website.

Conclusion

The digitization process, through not mandatory, is an attempt to lessen the hassles of the pensioners in getting life certificates. The conventional methods of getting a life certificate also remain but the easy breezy process can mean freedom from making a mental note about November every year.
