We Built OpenAlgo for 2 Years. Today It Crossed 100,000 Downloads.

2 min read

Two years ago, we started building OpenAlgo.

No funding.
No hype launch.
No growth tricks.

Just a belief that infrastructure still matters.

Today, OpenAlgo has crossed 100000 downloads.

It also has more than 3000 members in Discord constantly sharing ideas, reporting issues, testing edge cases, and building on top of it.

But let me clarify something important.

OpenAlgo was never meant to be a SaaS product.

It is open source.
It is self hostable.
It is an algorithmic trading platform that lets you run your own trading infrastructure.
It works across 30 plus brokers.
It helps you build and deploy strategies faster using modern AI tools.

From day one, this was about ownership and depth.

You run it.
You control it.
You extend it.

Everyone Can Generate a Trading Bot

Today, anyone can vibe code an algorithmic trading platform.

With tools like Claude Code and Codex CLI, you can spin up:

A backtester.
A broker integration.
A strategy engine.
A dashboard.

In a weekend.

That is no longer impressive.

The real question is different.

Can you design systems?
Can you make them reliable?
Can you make them coherent?
Can you make them survive production chaos?

Generating code is easy.

Building infrastructure is not.

I Love Building Infrastructure

There is a difference between building apps and building systems.

Apps sit on top.
Infrastructure goes underneath.

Trading infrastructure forces you to think about:

Real time data pipelines.
Execution reliability.
Risk engines.
Failure handling.
Latency trade offs.
Broker abstractions across 30 plus integrations.

It forces systems thinking.

OpenAlgo is my way of operating at that layer.

Not just wrapping APIs.
Not just building a UI.
But designing something foundational that people can self host and scale.

AI Changed the Builder Game

Over the last two years, AI evolved at an incredible pace.

We built alongside that evolution.

We started with ChatGPT 4.
Then moved to 4o.
Then explored reasoning focused models.

We experimented early with Cline using Claude Sonnet 3.5 inside VS Code.
Later we explored Windsurf which significantly increased our productivity.
Now we use Claude Code which feels incredibly powerful.
We also actively use Codex CLI in our workflow.
Currently we are building with Opus 4.6.

Each shift in tooling increased output.

But output alone is not the edge.

Judgment is the edge.
Architecture is the edge.
Staying power is the edge.

OpenAlgo became our real world stress test.

Not toy demos.
Not weekend experiments.
Real infrastructure running across multiple brokers with real users.

A Deep Community Effort

OpenAlgo is not a solo story.

It is a deep community effort to build something at scale leveraging AI tools.

More than 3000 members in Discord constantly contribute.

They bombard us with ideas.
They uncover rare bugs.
They test extreme scenarios.
They propose architectural improvements.
They build plugins and strategies.

Many contributors are also using AI tools to extend the platform in creative ways.

AI amplifies builders.
Builders improve the infrastructure.
The infrastructure enables more builders.

That loop compounds.

Becoming Dangerous in One Arena

There is always a temptation to chase the next big thing.

But serious systems are built by people who stay in one arena long enough to develop taste.

Trading systems demand:

Technical depth.
Economic reasoning.
Risk awareness.
Systems thinking.

OpenAlgo is my commitment to that arena.

It is not about shipping features fast.

It is about becoming exceptionally competent in building infrastructure.

It Is a Forge

Even if OpenAlgo never became massive, it would still matter.

It sharpens architecture skills.
It deepens understanding of markets.
It improves how AI tools are leveraged in serious engineering.
It builds discipline.

Products can fail.

Skill compounds.

A Long Term Bet

Markets are becoming programmable.

APIs are expanding.
Automation is increasing.
AI can generate strategies.
Execution infrastructure is becoming more accessible.

We are moving toward a world where humans design and machines execute.

OpenAlgo is my bet on that shift.

Crossing 100000 downloads is not the finish line.

It is evidence.

Evidence that open source infrastructure still matters.
Evidence that AI agentic tools and LLM intelligence are becoming incredibly powerful.
Evidence that small, AI augmented teams and communities can build real systems at scale.

OpenAlgo is not just a platform.

It is proof of what modern builders can do when they combine depth, community, and AI leverage.

And we are only getting started.
