How I Recovered 47 GB of Disk Space with WinDirStat

1 min read

For weeks, I was battling a frustrating mystery:
My system drive was running out of space for no apparent reason.

Every day, I’d lose a few more gigabytes. I wasn’t downloading anything large. I even uninstalled some really useful tools—apps I relied on frequently or had plans to explore soon—just to stay afloat. But the disk kept filling up.

Then one day, the free space just vanished within an hour. That’s when I knew I needed to dig deeper.

The ChatGPT Discovery

Out of desperation, I turned to ChatGPT and asked, “Why is my disk getting full even though I didn’t install anything?”

The answer wasn’t just helpful—it introduced me to a game-changing utility: WinDirStat.

WinDirStat: A Lightweight Superpower

WinDirStat is a tiny but mighty open-source tool that scans your disk and shows you exactly what’s taking up space—with visual clarity.

Within a few minutes of running it on my system, the truth was revealed:

  • docker_data.vhdx – over 21 GB of silent, creeping disk usage from Docker Desktop’s virtual storage
  • pip\cache – 6.8 GB of Python wheels and downloads I didn’t even know were saved
  • Temp, npm-cache, Yarn, Google cache – all quietly hoarding valuable storage

The visual treemap made it crystal clear where my space had gone.

The Cleanup Process

Armed with this new insight, I set out to reclaim my space:

✅ Docker Cleanup

Using commands recommended by ChatGPT and a great article on Medium:

docker system prune -a --volumes

Then I shut down WSL and ran this to shrink the massive .vhdx file:

wsl --shutdown

opened PowerShell and run:

diskpart
select vdisk file="C:\Users\Admin1\AppData\Local\Docker\wsl\disk\docker_data.vhdx"
attach vdisk readonly
compact vdisk
detach vdisk
exit

Moving Docker to a Different Drive

One of the final steps I took was relocating Docker’s virtual disk to a different drive. Since my C: drive was constantly under pressure, it made sense to offload that storage elsewhere.

Here’s how I did it:

I opened Docker Desktop, went into Settings, navigated to the Resources tab, and under Advanced, I changed the disk image location to a different drive—specifically, D:\Docker. After saving the changes and restarting Docker, the virtual disk started living on the D: drive instead of bloating up my system drive.

It was a small move that made a big difference.

✅ Python & Temp Cache

pip cache purge

Also cleaned %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp, npm, Yarn, and a few unused program folders.

From Full to Free: 45 GB Recovered

The results? My disk went from red-lining to breathing room:

  • Recovered over 45 GB of space
  • No more unexplained space loss
  • No need to uninstall anything anymore

And yes, I left the Google cache alone for now—because, frankly, I’m satisfied with the space I got back.

What I Learned

  • Tools like WinDirStat are lifesavers. Small, fast, and shockingly effective.
  • Docker on Windows stores data in .vhdx virtual disks that don’t shrink automatically.
  • Temp and cache folders silently pile up unless manually cleaned.
  • Sometimes, asking ChatGPT the right question leads you to the right tool.

Final Thoughts

If your disk is mysteriously filling up, don’t panic—scan it.
WinDirStat + a bit of cleanup know-how can save you days of frustration, just like it did for me.

No more random uninstalls. Just clarity, action, and 47GB of fresh breathing space.
