The earth could be hit by a wave of violent space weather as early as Tuesday(3rd Aug 2010) after a massive explosion on the sun, scientists have warned. The explosion, called a coronal mass ejection, was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space.

Though only northern territories could see it, the “solar tsunami” had quite the dramatic effect on the skies last night. Thanks to a massive eruption of plasma on the surface of the sun, or a coronal mass ejection, Earth was showered in ionized atoms last night, creating an “aurora” in the sky.
